The Grimaldi Group has marked a major milestone in eco-friendly maritime transport with the delivery of the Grande Pacifico, the first of a new class of five groundbreaking 9,800-CEU Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs).
Built by China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu, the vessel sets a new benchmark for capacity and environmental efficiency in the global shipping sector.
Measuring 220 metres in length and 38 metres in width, the Grande Pacifico features 15 versatile decks, delivering approximately 9% more cargo capacity than Grimaldi’s preceding 9,000-CEU generation. Operating at a reliable service speed of 18 knots, the ship is capable of transporting more than 6,900 vehicles alongside high-and-heavy rolling freight.
Classed by RINA as Ammonia-Ready, the Grande Pacifico is packed with cutting-edge sustainable innovations designed to drastically minimize its carbon footprint. Key environmental systems include:
-
Renewable & Hybrid Power: Equipped with 5 MWh lithium-ion batteries, 2,500 square metres of solar panels, and seamless shore power connectivity for zero emissions at berth.
-
Advanced Hydrodynamics: Features an optimized hull design, a state-of-the-art air lubrication system, low-drag silicone hull coatings, and an innovative gate rudder.
-
Unrivaled Efficiency: According to Grimaldi, this suite of integrated technologies cuts fuel consumption by up to 50% compared to previous-generation car carriers.
The Grande Pacifico will soon join Grimaldi’s global network, driving sustainable supply chains for the automotive industry worldwide.
