Food security ministers from Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies issued a joint statement on August 25, 2026, pledging to accelerate innovation-led transformation of agri-food systems and deepen regional cooperation on trade, fisheries, and rural development.
Chaired by China’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Zhang Zhu, the 11th APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting drew participation from the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Food Program and the APEC Business Advisory Council.
Ministers expressed support for new principles on the use of artificial intelligence and agricultural biotechnology to strengthen food system resilience. They called for increased investment in research and development. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of reducing food loss and waste throughout production, storage, and logistics. Key points included the need for sustainable fisheries governance to combat illegal fishing, science-based trade facilitation, and stronger rural infrastructure to boost farmer incomes.
The statement acknowledged that, despite the Asia-Pacific region being a major hub for global food production, it still faces challenges from extreme weather, supply chain disruptions, and persistent food loss. This highlights the urgent need for faster, technology-driven reforms.
The commitments are particularly significant for the Philippines, which heavily relies on rice imports and loses up to 29 percent of its crops, such as onions, after harvest, according to industry data. APEC’s focus on post-harvest technology, trade facilitation, and fisheries resilience aligns with the priorities that the Department of Agriculture is already pursuing both domestically and within ASEAN.
The timing is crucial, as forecasters warn of a strong El Niño expected in late 2026, which could reduce local palay output and strain water supplies. This situation adds urgency to APEC’s call for climate-resilient, technology-driven agricultural practices.
Ministers thanked China for hosting the meeting and announced that Vietnam will host the 12th APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting in 2027. – Armin A. Amio
