Taal Vista Hotel, a cornerstone of SM Group’s hospitality business, has pledged to expand its sustainability programs. With 255 local suppliers providing food, beverages, goods, and services, the hotel ensures that its operations positively impact the Tagaytay community and beyond.
“Taal Vista’s commitment to sustainability and local businesses boosts the local economy while promoting environmentally conscious practices,” said Ramon Makilan, General Manager of Taal Vista Hotel. “By supporting local suppliers, we’re not just building relationships—we’re building a stronger, more resilient community.”
The hotel also partners with local artisans to promote sustainable and community-based practices. Through a collaboration with designer Zarah Juan and Bahay Kalingap Casa de Sueños, Taal Vista launched *Tela Tales*, a project that repurposes old hotel linens into eco-friendly bags. This initiative provides work for local volunteers, primarily women, while reducing waste. Additionally, the hotel embraces farm-to-table practices by sourcing fresh, organic produce directly from its own vegetable garden.
Taal Vista’s community-driven efforts reflect the SM Group’s core principles of inclusive development and corporate social responsibility. As the hotel celebrates its 85th anniversary, it continues to uphold a legacy of empowerment.
Changing Lives Through Opportunity
Beyond its community-focused initiatives, Taal Vista Hotel serves as a platform for life-changing opportunities.
Take the story of Joel Tubig, a pool attendant who transitioned from construction work and tricycle driving to a stable career at the hotel. Joel’s transformation began when he received a technical-vocational scholarship from SM Foundation. This opportunity allowed him to acquire new skills and build a career at Taal Vista.
“Taal Vista is not just a hotel; it’s part of my family’s journey,” Joel shared. “Thanks to the scholarship and a steady job, I’ve been able to send my children to private school, buy a car, and even invest in property. Without these opportunities, I honestly don’t know where I’d be today.”
This theme of empowerment is echoed by Jeric Tenorio, a room attendant who recently marked his 13th year at the hotel. A graduate of SM Foundation, Jeric began as an on-the-job trainee and steadily advanced within the organization, thanks to its nurturing culture and focus on employee growth.
“Taal Vista invests in its people,” Jeric said. “I was able to pursue my degree while working, and the training I received here gave me the confidence to grow both professionally and personally. Today, I mentor new employees, sharing what I’ve learned.”
Empowering the Local Workforce
As one of the largest employers in Tagaytay, Taal Vista Hotel draws 79% of its workforce from nearby communities. This focus on local hiring has significantly impacted the region, providing residents with stable incomes, the ability to support their families, and improved quality of life.
Reflecting on the hotel’s 85-year journey, General Manager Ramon Makilan emphasized the importance of investing in both the community and its people.
“Our commitment to providing career opportunities, supporting sustainable practices, and giving back to the community is unwavering,” he said. “We look forward to many more years of service, creating lasting positive change for generations to come.”
Taal Vista Hotel’s 85-year legacy is a testament to the power of community-centered business practices. It demonstrates that true success is measured not only by exceptional service but also by the meaningful impact made on employees, suppliers, and the local community.
