Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco on Thursday, May 15, addressed distinguished guests at the SKIFT Asia Forum, outlining the Marcos Administration’s commitment to boosting comprehensive digitalization and connectivity within the Philippine tourism sector. This strategic push follows the recent approval of the Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) through Executive Order No. 86.
Secretary Frasco emphasized the DOT’s robust convergence program with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT). This collaborative effort aims to digitize tourism services nationwide and significantly enhance internet connectivity in over 90 identified tourist destinations across the archipelago.
“Our focus is really to be able to have strong infrastructure in terms of assisting our digital nomads in the country,” stated Secretary Frasco. “We work very closely with our regional offices as well as our local government units across the country to make sure that tourism safety is of top priority, as well as opportunities to have cultural experiences in the country are present through our tourism circuits.”
The Secretary also highlighted the Philippines’ proactive measures to facilitate longer-term stays for visitors, building upon the existing Special (Resident) Retiree’s Visa offered by the Philippine Retirement Authority, which allows stays beyond the one-year digital nomad visa period.
The Philippines, home to world-renowned islands such as Palawan – recently declared the World’s Best Island – Boracay, and Siargao, is actively welcoming individuals seeking immersive adventures and cultural experiences while working remotely. The vision for the country is to attract “quality travelers” who respect the Philippines’ sustainable tourism framework, contribute to local communities through increased tourism spending, and are inclined to make repeat visits.
“Overall, our approach is really to be able to ensure that the Philippines develops in a manner that provides unforgettable, immersive, and cultural experiences but also safeguards the longevity of our destinations,” Secretary Frasco concluded.
The DOT’s initiatives underscore a comprehensive strategy to position the Philippines as a premier destination for digital nomads and all travelers, leveraging technology and sustainable practices to offer enriching and responsible tourism experiences.
