PPA may rebid Zamboang port terminal project this year

The Zamboanga Terminal Port project may be scheduled for bidding this year following the termination of the contract with MARC Builders Inc. primarily due to prolonged delays.

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) said it will try to rebid this year the terminal port project. Rebidding will be posted same as other projects for procurement, the PPA added.

An addendum to his earlier statement, PPA Assistant General Manager for Engineering Engr. James Gantalao identified the contractor of port terminal project as MAC Builders Inc., which won the bid in 2020. The project was awarded to the winning bidder on January 2021. At that time, prices of materials went up following the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in delays in the construction.

Gantalao said they called the attention of the contractor several times until it asked for extension of the construction work. PPA finally terminated the contract earlier this month.

To date, PPA said that out of the reported 56 percent physical accomplishment the contractor has only collected 18 percent or PHP82,861,701 of the total contract price of PHP272,822,349. With the termination of the contract, the contractor can no longer collect the balance of PHP189,960,648.

This ensures sufficient funds will remain available to complete the project as planned.
