The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) launched a new, comprehensive lighting system across all 13 MRT-3 stations on Wednesday, December 10, significantly improving the safety, security, and accessibility for thousands of daily commuters.
The initiative directly addresses President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to prioritize the well-being and mobility of the riding public.
The simultaneous lighting ceremony, held at the MRT-3 Kamuning Station, was led by key officials, including Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, and Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., symbolizing a unified effort for public safety.
The project covers all 13 stations, spanning from North Avenue Station in Quezon City to Taft Avenue Station in Pasay City.
“The directive of our President to light the 13 stations of MRT-3 is historic. To others, it may be a simple project, but often, these simple projects deliver the most meaningful impact to our people,” Secretary Lopez stated during the event. “This enhanced lighting system will ensure that commuters’ movements up and down the stations are clearer and safer.”
Secretary Lopez emphasized that the brighter stations will be supplemented by an increase in security personnel, especially during the busy holiday season, to ensure the absolute safety of riders.
PNP Chief Nartatez Jr. fully extended the PNP’s support, committing to deploy additional police forces not only along the MRT-3 but also at the LRT-1 and LRT-2 lines to maintain peace and order.
“The PNP is committed to supporting the MRT and LRT, especially as this is a convergence on peace, order, and public safety. We are always in coordination with the different station managers to improve these conditions. For instance, with Christmas approaching, we recognize the necessity of good lighting,” Chief Nartatez Jr. affirmed.
The new lighting system is designed for long-term use, extending its benefits far beyond the holiday season. The transport chief also noted that the improved illumination extends beyond the stations, making the roads passing by the MRT-3 brighter for all surrounding communities.
The DOTr and MRT-3 view this successful implementation as a vital step in their ongoing commitment to modernize and optimize the country’s mass transit system for a better commuter experience.
