MRT-3 announces nighttime re-ballasting works to enhance rail safety and passenger comfort

As part of its ongoing comprehensive rehabilitation project, the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) will commence critical re-ballasting works starting January 15, 2026. These track maintenance activities are designed to improve track stability, drainage, and overall rail safety, ensuring a smoother and more reliable commute for the public.

To prioritize passenger convenience, MRT-3 train operations will not be affected, as all technical works are scheduled strictly during non-operational hours (11:30 PM to 3:30 AM).

To facilitate the movement of heavy machinery and materials, a temporary lane rearrangement will be implemented along a 100-meter section of the EDSA Carousel Bus Lane between Guadalupe and Buendia stations.

The schedule for the lane adjustments is as follows:

Direction Dates Time Window
Southbound Jan 15 – April 5, 2026 11:30 PM – 3:30 AM
Northbound April 6 – June 30, 2026 11:30 PM – 3:30 AM

Re-ballasting involves the replacement of worn-out crushed stone (ballast) that supports the railroad ties. Over time, ballast degrades, which can affect track alignment and drainage. By refreshing these materials, the MRT-3 ensures:

  • Enhanced Track Integrity: Greater stability for faster and safer train transitions.

  • Improved Passenger Comfort: A significant reduction in vibration and noise during travel.

  • Long-term Sustainability: Better drainage to prevent track erosion during the rainy season.

The MRT-3 management has closely coordinated with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to implement a robust Traffic Management Plan. Personnel will be deployed to the affected areas to guide motorists and bus operators during the four-hour nightly work window.

“We are committed to modernizing the MRT-3 while minimizing the impact on our daily commuters,” the MRT-3 management stated. “These essential maintenance works are an investment in the safety and longevity of our rail system.”

Commuters and motorists are advised to plan their trips accordingly and follow directional signage in the Guadalupe-Buendia area. We thank the public for their continued patience and cooperation as we build a better, safer MRT-3.
