DOTr and DICT launch free Wi-Fi at 17 EDSA busway stations

Commuters on the EDSA Busway can now enjoy free, secure, and reliable internet access following the official launch of the “Free Wi-Fi for All” program. The initiative, a joint effort between the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), was unveiled Thursday at the Quezon Avenue Station.

The rollout follows a direct mandate from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to modernize public transportation by integrating digital services into the nation’s primary transit hubs.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez emphasized that high-speed connectivity is no longer a luxury but a fundamental tool for the modern Filipino.”Internet connection is now a basic necessity,” Secretary Lopez stated. “We are grateful to the DICT for prioritizing this program. It allows our commuters to access government services, finish work tasks, or engage in online learning while in transit, all without consuming their personal mobile data.”

  • Seamless Digital Payments: The free service complements the EDSA Busway’s cashless system, allowing passengers to use QR codes and e-wallets like GCash for fare payments without needing an active data plan.

  • Real-Time Updates: Commuters can stay informed with live transit schedules and service alerts.

  • Productivity & Entertainment: Passengers can manage job-related tasks or enjoy light entertainment during their journey.

  • Cybersecurity: To ensure user safety, the DICT Cybersecurity Team monitors all traffic and utilizes Domain Name System (DNS) security to protect against digital threats.

The service is currently active at 17 key stations, including North Avenue, Quezon Avenue, Ayala, Taft Avenue, and SM Mall of Asia (MOA).

DICT Secretary Henry Aguda announced that this is only the beginning. Once fiber connectivity is finalized by March, bandwidth will increase significantly. Plans are also underway to expand free Wi-Fi to trains, seaports, and the Express/Skip Bus service.

Stations currently undergoing rehabilitation—including Monumento, Guadalupe, and PITX—will be activated immediately upon the completion of Phase 1 repairs.
