Philippines to Host Inaugural ASEAN RailCon

The Philippines, through the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and its implementing agency, the Philippine Railways Institute (PRI), supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), will proudly lead the inaugural virtual ASEAN Railway Conference (ASEAN RailCon) on June 18–19, 2026. This landmark event places the country at the forefront of regional efforts to advance railway cooperation, resilience, and sustainability across Southeast Asia.

With the theme “NAVIGATING OUR FUTURE, TOGETHER: Advancing ASEAN Connectivity Through Railways,” ASEAN RailCon 2026 will convene railway leaders, experts, and institutions from all eleven ASEAN Member States. The conference will revolve around four subthemes: Sustainability, Resilience, and Responsiveness for a Future-Ready Railway System; Innovation and Technology to Drive Modern Railway Transformation; Safety, Standards, and Service Excellence to Elevate Passenger Experience and Operational Performance; and Innovative Funding and Partnership to Scale Up Railway Investment.

The ASEAN railway sector continues to face challenges in safety, efficiency, and workforce capacity, compounded by rising fuel costs and the global energy crisis. By hosting ASEAN RailCon, the Philippines aims to provide a dynamic platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration, enabling Member States to exchange best practices, innovations, and strategies in railway development, operations, and maintenance.

Expected outcomes include strengthened partnerships among ASEAN railway institutions, a proposed ASEAN Railway Training Network Platform (ARTNP), and the identification of collaborative solutions to address shared challenges such as energy resilience, interoperability, and workforce development. Conference proceedings will be compiled into a knowledge compendium to serve as a reference for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers.

Convened as an official side-event of the Philippine Chairship of ASEAN 2026, and with strategic support from the ASEAN Secretariat, the ASEAN RailCon 2026 underscores the Philippines’ leadership role in advancing regional railway connectivity. By convening this inaugural conference, the country reaffirms its commitment to building a railway sector that is safe, efficient, energy-resilient, and sustainable, not only for the Philippines but for the entire ASEAN region.
