Maersk hosts DMW Secretary on board Tauranga Maersk to strengthen support for Filipino seafarers

Maersk recently had the honor of welcoming Hans Leo J. Cacdac, Secretary of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), and his delegation onboard the vessel Tauranga Maersk during its port call in Vancouver.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for the delegation to meet with the crew and engage in a meaningful dialogue focused on advancing the welfare, development, and support of Filipino seafarers.

With nearly 4,500 Filipino seafarers serving across its global fleet, Maersk remains deeply committed to fostering a maritime workplace built on inclusion, respect, and long-term career opportunity.

During the visit, Maersk highlighted its ongoing investments in initiatives designed to support maritime professionals throughout their careers. Key areas of focus include:

  • Promoting Diversity & Inclusion: Maersk is actively driving programs to encourage greater gender diversity at sea. Notably, women now represent 5.2% of Maersk’s Filipino seafarer workforce—a figure that stands significantly above the global maritime industry average.

  • Structured Career Pathways: Providing clear, progressive career tracks to help crew members grow, advance, and transition into leadership roles within the maritime industry.

  • Holistic Well-being: Supporting both physical and mental health through dedicated wellness programs and resources tailored for seafarers and their families.

  • Continuous Upskilling: Offering robust training and knowledge-sharing opportunities to strengthen technical and leadership capabilities across all ranks. “We thank Secretary Cacdac and the DMW team for this meaningful dialogue and for their unwavering commitment to the welfare of Filipino seafarers,” said a Maersk representative. “Collaborations like these ensure we continue to lift industry standards and provide a supportive environment for our workforce at sea.”
