CEBU CITY, Cebu — Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. called on the private sector to take a bigger role in strengthening the livestock and meat processing industry, saying government and business must work hand in hand to keep food supplies stable, contain price pressures, and protect public health amid mounting threats from animal diseases.
Speaking at the 37th anniversary of the Philippine Association of Meat Processors Inc. (PAMPI) held in this city, Tiu Laurel said the industry has become a critical partner in maintaining the food security despite recurring outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF), avian influenza, rising production costs, supply chain disruptions and climate-related risks.
“Despite these obstacles, you have remained resilient, sustaining food production, protecting livelihoods, and ensuring a stable supply of quality food products,” he told meat processors.
Tiu Laurel said the Department of Agriculture continues to ramp up swine recovery and poultry development programs, strengthen biosecurity protocols, improve veterinary services and intensify disease control efforts, particularly against ASF. But he stressed that rebuilding the livestock sector cannot rest soleyly on government initiatives.
“The government cannot accomplish these goals alone. Our progress depends on strong partnerships with industry and other stakeholders,” the DA chief said.
His remarks highlight the increasing strategic role of the meat processing industry, which has helped cushion consumers from supply disruptions by transforming available livestock into affordable, safe and readily accessible food products even as domestic production faces repeated disease outbreaks.
Tiu Laurel also urged companies to invest in automation, digitalization, traceability systems and smart manufacturing, saying technology will be essential in improving efficiency, ensuring food safety and boosting the industry’s global competitiveness.
He likewise called for greater focus on sustainability, climate resilience, and responsible resource management as food manufacturers navigate a more volatile operating environment.
Tiu Laurel said maintaining consumer trust through high standards of food safety, transparency and accountability will determine the industry’s long-term success.
With different factors continuing to threaten production globally, he said a resilient meat processing sector has become more than a manufacturing industry.
Tiu Laurel underscored that the industry is a vital pillar of the food security strategy, helping stabilize supply, moderate prices, and ensure Filipino families continue to have access to safe and nutritious protein.
