Philippines, Vietnam reaffirm commitment to stronger ties

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral ties during a productive meeting held on the sidelines of the 46th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Kuala Lumpur.

The two leaders emphasized the importance of enhancing the Philippines-Vietnam relationship, which marks its 10th anniversary as a strategic partnership this year. They acknowledged the progress made since President Marcos’ state visit to Vietnam in January 2024 and discussed the potential elevation of their bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

“Our ministers are in active discussions on the possibility of elevating our strategic partnership,” President Marcos stated. “These talks reflect our mutual desire to expand and deepen cooperation in key areas.”

Prime Minister Pham welcomed the progress in bilateral relations and expressed optimism about the next phase of the partnership. “I hope that it has come to the point where we can elevate the strategic partnership between our two countries,” he said.

The leaders noted significant strides in economic and trade collaboration, and reiterated their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation in agriculture, food security, education, tourism, and cultural exchanges.

President Marcos also extended his condolences to Prime Minister Pham on the passing of former Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong on May 20, 2025.

The meeting reaffirmed the Philippines and Vietnam’s shared vision of a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Southeast Asia, anchored in mutual respect, cooperation, and enduring friendship.
