DOT welcomes new retirees to the Philippines, emphasizing warmth and community spirit

Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco on Wednesday, June 4, led the oath-taking ceremony for nine new members of the Philippine Retirement Authority’s (PRA) Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV) program at the DOT Office in Makati City. The ceremony marked a significant moment in the retirees’ journey, as they officially chose the Philippines as their new home.

In her welcoming address, Secretary Frasco extended her heartfelt gratitude and congratulations to the retirees, acknowledging their trust and decision to settle in the country. “On behalf of the Department of Tourism, the Philippine Retirement Authority, and the Filipino people, welcome home. We’re truly grateful that you’ve chosen the Philippines as your second home. Your decision to retire in our country is not only a personal milestone. It is an expression of trust. And for that, we are profoundly grateful,” she stated.

Now in its fourth decade, the SRRV program stands as a testament to the Philippines’ enduring commitment to openness, friendship, and cultural exchange. Secretary Frasco highlighted that beyond the country’s renowned beautiful destinations, it is the inherent warmth and strong values of the Filipino people that truly make retirement in the Philippines uniquely rewarding. She underscored the spirit of “Bayanihan”—a deeply rooted Filipino value of community and compassion—as the essence of the Filipino way of life and the heart of the country’s welcoming embrace.

Secretary Frasco further emphasized the positive impact of the new retirees on the nation’s tourism landscape. “Your presence fuels the evolution of Philippine tourism towards one that is more inclusive, sustainable, and empowering for all. As you settle into your lives here in the Philippines, may you find not only comfort and connection but also a deep sense of purpose and belonging. Not just in the places that you visit, but in the people that you meet and the relationships that you will build,” she added.

The DOT Secretary reaffirmed the department’s unwavering commitment to nurturing these relationships and ensuring that retirees feel a genuine sense of belonging within their new communities. The SRRV, a non-immigrant visa issued by the PRA, offers multiple entry and indefinite stay in the Philippines, facilitating a seamless and enriching retirement experience.

The event was attended by distinguished guests, including PRA General Manager Bob Zozobrado, DOT Undersecretaries Ferdinand Jumapao and Verna Buensuceso, Assistant Secretary Ronald Conopio, and other key representatives and members from both the Department of Tourism and the Philippine Retirement Authority.
