BOC intensifies efforts to protect OFWs from balikbayan box scams

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) is stepping up its efforts to protect Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) from fraudulent temporary freight forwarders, urging the public to exercise extreme caution when sending “balikbayan” boxes to their families in the Philippines. This intensified campaign aims to prevent the hassle and heartbreak caused by scams and ensure that remittances and gifts reach their intended recipients safely.

The BOC reminds OFWs and their families to be vigilant and informed to avoid falling victim to unscrupulous operators. Key advisories include:

  • Choose a Trusted Freight Forwarder: Prioritize companies with a proven track record. Always read reviews and feedback from other customers to gauge their reliability and service quality.
  • Verify Registration and Accreditation: Ensure the freight forwarder is registered with the Department of Trade and Industry – Fair Trade Enforcement Bureau (DTI-FTEB) and duly accredited by relevant authorities. This verifies their legitimacy and adherence to regulations.
  • Beware of Unrealistic Low Charges: Be suspicious of freight forwarders offering unusually cheap rates. These “super cheap charges” can often be a red flag for a scam or a modus operandi that could lead to lost packages or additional, hidden fees later on.
  • Document Everything: As a crucial precautionary measure, set aside and keep copies of all receipts, take photos of the contents of your balikbayan box, and document any agreements or communications with the freight forwarder. These will serve as vital evidence in case of disputes or issues.
  • Monitor Your Shipment: Request and keep records of the container number, bill of lading, and port of destination. These details are essential for monitoring the status and whereabouts of your shipment and can help in tracking down delayed or lost boxes.

The BOC understands the immense trust and sentiment placed in every balikbayan box, which often contains not just goods but also love and sacrifices from OFWs for their families. By following these guidelines, the Bureau aims to empower OFWs and their beneficiaries to make informed decisions and safeguard their hard-earned money and belongings.

For any questions, concerns, or to report suspicious activities, the public is encouraged to contact the BOC directly through their official channels:

The Bureau of Customs remains committed to its mandate of facilitating trade while protecting the welfare of Filipino citizens, especially the invaluable contributions of OFWs to the nation.
