AirAsia offers tips for worry-free rainy season travel

As the Philippines enters its rainy season, AirAsia Philippines is providing essential tips for travelers to navigate potential weather-related disruptions while also highlighting the significant cost-saving opportunities available during this off-peak period.

The rainy season, typically from June to September, can bring adverse weather conditions that impact airport and airline operations. In 2024, the AirAsia Philippines’ Operations Control Center (OCC) recorded 23 Lightning Red Alerts (LRA), leading to temporary suspensions of ground movement at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). Heavy rainfall can also contribute to significant traffic congestion on roads leading to the airport.

To mitigate potential delays, AirAsia Philippines advises guests to allot extra travel time to the airport – extending the usual two hours for domestic flights to at least four hours, and three hours for international flights to at least six hours. This ensures ample time for smooth check-in and boarding procedures.

Despite these potential challenges, the rainy season presents a golden opportunity for budget-conscious travelers. “As the rainy season begins, we ask our guests to plan ahead and exercise patience when disruptions like weather, outside of the airline’s control, happen,” said FO Steve Dailisan, AirAsia Philippines Head of Communications and Corporate Affairs. “At AirAsia, we will always put a premium on crew and passenger safety. However, traveling during the rainy season, from June to September, also presents some great value opportunities. It is during these ‘lean season’ months that airfares are low and hotel rates drop—ideal for budget travelers and adventure-seekers.”

To help guests make the most of their rainy season adventures, AirAsia, the world’s best low-cost airline, shares the following travel tips:

  • Check Rainfall Patterns: Utilize weather apps for timely forecasts. Certain destinations, such as Bohol, often experience less rain and sunnier weather compared to other domestic spots during this period. Pack weather-appropriate clothing and essential medications, especially when traveling to cooler or wetter regions.
  • Explore Indoor Activities: When outdoor conditions are gloomy, consider visiting museums, indoor theme parks, and other relaxation spots for unique experiences.
  • Dive into Hearty Gastronomic Adventures: Indulge in comforting local cuisine. Popular rainy season treats include Pancit Molo, Chicken Binakol, and Bachoy from Bacolod, Iloilo, and Roxas, respectively.

Even though the rainy season marks the start of the travel industry’s lean period, AirAsia Philippines encourages guests to explore “rainy-friendly” destinations that are less crowded and offer a more serene and affordable travel experience.
