Berong Nickel Corp. secures key agreement for new Palawan project

Berong Nickel Corp (BNC), a subsidiary of DMCI Mining, has been granted a Mineral Production Sharing Agreement (MPSA) by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for its new Long Point property in Aborlan, Palawan. The agreement, signed on August 8, 2025, grants BNC the exclusive right to explore, develop, and utilize mineral resources across the 2,177.34-hectare contract area.

The MPSA has an initial term of 25 years, with the option to renew for another 25 years, and is a major step forward for the Long Point project. BNC’s President, Tulsi Das C. Reyes, emphasized the company’s commitment to responsible mining practices.

“The MPSA is not just about resource development. It’s about creating shared value with the people of Palawan through responsible mining,” said Reyes. “We will work closely with our host communities to ensure development goes hand in hand with environmental stewardship and inclusive growth, guided by the same standards that shaped our operations and ongoing rehabilitation of the Berong mine in Quezon.”

Project Details and Economic Impact

BNC has already invested approximately ₱1.0 billion in the Long Point project since 2024, funding fleet expansion, port infrastructure, exploration, and pre-operating costs. With an Environmental Compliance Certificate for 1 million wet metric tons of annual production, operations are targeted to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025.

The project is expected to create over 1,000 jobs, with a focus on hiring from local indigenous and nearby communities. BNC has already initiated a training program for operators and drivers to prepare candidates for these full-time roles.

Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

The MPSA for the Long Point property builds on BNC’s established track record of environmental and community responsibility in Palawan. The company’s landmark mine rehabilitation program at its former Quezon mine is the first approved Final Mine Rehabilitation and Decommissioning Plan (FMRDP) in the MIMAROPA region.

To date, this program has rehabilitated more than 106 hectares, planted over 522,600 native seedlings and more than 1 million mangroves, and rescued and released nearly 1,700 sea turtles. The Quezon mine, which operated from 2006 until 2021, generated 1,634 direct and indirect jobs and contributed ₱2.8 billion in various fees and taxes during its lifespan.

Berong Nickel Corporation is a subsidiary of DMCI Mining, a leading mining company in the Philippines. BNC is committed to sustainable and responsible mining practices, focusing on environmental protection and community development.
