OAG, a leading provider of global travel data and insights, released its latest market analysis for Southeast Asia, revealing a dynamic and diverse landscape for the region’s aviation industry. The data for October shows a mixed performance, with certain carriers and markets demonstrating strong growth while others experience significant capacity reductions.
The analysis confirms AirAsia’s continued dominance as the region’s largest carrier, reporting 3 million seats this month, a robust increase of 14.8% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, Vietjet demonstrated the fastest growth among major carriers, boosting its capacity by 20.9% to 2.5 million seats. Conversely, Lion Air and Batik Air saw the steepest declines within the top 10, with capacity falling by 17.7% and 13.2% respectively.
On a market level, Indonesia remains the largest in Southeast Asia with 10.6 million scheduled seats, despite a 9.2% reduction in capacity. Thailand holds the second-largest market position with 7.3 million seats, representing a 5.7% increase. The markets experiencing the largest year-on-year growth in seats are Vietnam and Malaysia, adding 819,100 and 471,400 new seats, respectively. The Lao People’s Democratic Republic recorded the fastest growth rate in the region, with a 17% increase.
Among the region’s airports, Singapore Changi continues to lead with 3.5 million seats, even with a slight 0.6% decline in capacity. Kuala Lumpur secured its position as the second busiest airport with 3.33 million seats, a 6% increase from the previous year. Airports showing the most significant growth in the top 10 include Hanoi and Bangkok Don Mueang, with capacity rising by 14.1% and 13% respectively. Makassar registered the largest capacity reduction among top airports, declining by 18.3%.
