NEC Philippines advocates for a unified, data-driven strategy to combat severe traffic congestion

In response to alarming new data from the 2024 TomTom Traffic Index, NEC Philippines is calling for a more integrated, data-driven, and collaborative approach to addressing the country’s worsening traffic crisis. The report, which analyzed 500 cities globally, revealed that Filipino commuters are losing an astonishing amount of time each year to traffic, a significant drain on productivity and well-being.

Key Findings Highlight Urgency

The 2024 TomTom Traffic Index paints a sobering picture of urban mobility in the Philippines. While Metro Manila improved its global ranking, dropping from 1st place in 2023 to 14th, drivers in the capital still lose approximately 127 hours annually due to traffic congestion. This is surpassed by Davao City, which now holds the unfortunate title of the Philippines’ most congested city, ranking 8th globally. Davao residents spend an average of 32 minutes and 59 seconds to travel just 10 km, losing an estimated 136 hours per commuter each year.

The economic fallout of this congestion is severe. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) estimates that traffic in Metro Manila alone costs the economy a staggering ₱3.5 billion per day.

Technology as a Core Solution

NEC Philippines emphasizes that technology is not a silver bullet but a crucial enabler for effective, long-term solutions. According to Ma. Sherlyn C. Omalin, President of NEC Philippines, “Technology alone doesn’t solve congestion. It’s how we apply it across agencies, across modes, and with the commuter in mind. We need to treat mobility as a service, not just a system.”

NEC is a trusted partner in digital transformation for the transportation sector, with over 30 years of experience supporting public transport operators globally. The company offers a suite of services focused on smart ticketing, fleet management, and passenger information services. These solutions are designed to enhance operational efficiency, improve safety, and provide a better experience for commuters.

Carmelo Remudaro, Head of NEC Philippines’ Transportation Business Unit, added, “We’re not just building systems. We’re building access and opportunity. By creating what’s ahead in Philippine transportation, we aim to deliver smart and sustainable solutions that empower every Filipino commuter.”

The Path Forward: Collaboration is Key

NEC Philippines echoes the view that effective solutions require strong public-private partnerships. The company believes that collaboration between government, technology providers, and civil society is essential to building resilient, inclusive, and future-ready transportation systems.

“We are excited to collaborate with like-minded organizations that share our vision for advancing the Philippines’ transportation systems,” Omalin stated. The company’s call to action aligns with the Philippine Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) ongoing efforts to modernize rail, expand aviation, and upgrade public transport.
