OTS updates screening equipment to improve airport security and efficiency

The Office for Transportation Security (OTS) announced a significant step in its modernization efforts with the acquisition of new security screening equipment. The upgrade includes two units of Automatic Explosive Detection System (EDS), six dual-view cabin baggage X-ray machines, and five dual-view hold baggage X-ray machines.

This strategic move aligns with the directive of President Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr. to pursue the much-needed modernization of the country’s transportation security system. The new equipment will replace outdated units, aiming to improve the detection of explosives and other prohibited items while speeding up the security process for passengers. These enhancements also bolster the nation’s security posture in preparation for the Philippines’ hosting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.

The two new EDS units are scheduled for installation at NAIA Terminal 3. The six dual-view cabin baggage X-ray machines will be deployed to the final security screening checkpoints at airports in Puerto Princesa, Caticlan, Iloilo, Mactan-Cebu, Panglao, and Laoag. Additionally, the five hold baggage X-ray machines will be positioned at the Baggage Make-up Areas of the Puerto Princesa, Davao, Kalibo, Iloilo, and Zamboanga Airports.

“This acquisition is a crucial part of our commitment to ensuring the highest standards of security for the traveling public,” said a spokesperson of OTS. “By modernizing our technology, we are not only making our airports safer but also more efficient, providing a better experience for both domestic and international travelers.”
