U.S. announces Php 140 million investment to boost Philippine Coast Guard’s operational readiness

The U.S. government, through the Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), is pleased to announce Php 140 million in new funding dedicated to enhancing the Philippine Coast Guard’s (PCG) operational strength and maintenance capabilities. This critical initiative, which is led by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), reinforces the enduring maritime security partnership between the two nations.

The substantial investment aims to address key logistical and operational needs for the PCG, specifically focusing on the sustainment of its fleet. Funds will be utilized for essential maintenance, procurement of critical spare parts, and specialized training programs crucial for ensuring PCG vessels and equipment remain fully operational and mission-ready.

This capacity-building effort is designed to significantly increase the PCG’s ability to execute its core missions, which include protecting the Philippines’ extensive maritime domain, responding to humanitarian and disaster relief (HADR) operations, and combating transnational maritime threats.

U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, MaryKay L. Carlson, emphasized the strategic importance of the funding:

“I am thrilled to announce this substantial P140 million commitment from State INL. This USCG-led initiative is a testament to the ironclad alliance between the United States and the Philippines. By strengthening the PCG’s ability to maintain and operate its assets effectively, we are collectively advancing our shared goal of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, where sovereignty is respected and maritime order is upheld. A strong and capable Philippine Coast Guard is vital to regional stability.”

The partnership between the USCG and the PCG is a cornerstone of the U.S.-Philippines alliance. This new funding underscores a continuous, decades-long collaboration focused on professional development, interoperability, and the shared commitment to upholding international law in the maritime domain.

The U.S. government looks forward to the immediate implementation of this funding to see tangible improvements in the PCG’s operational presence and responsiveness across the archipelago.
