The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has successfully launched its nationwide White Beep Card Caravan, bringing the streamlined distribution of discounted fare cards directly to educational institutions. The initial leg of the program commenced this morning at De La Salle University (DLSU) on Taft Avenue, Manila, where students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) quickly secured their new cards.
This critical initiative ensures immediate access to the mandated 50 percent fare discount across the country’s main railway systems, including the MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2, significantly easing the financial burden on commuters.
The move comes as a direct response to the order issued by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to the DOTr, prioritizing efforts to ease hardships and enhance the commuting experience for the public.
Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez emphasized the importance of accessibility and efficiency in the program rollout.
“We have made it easier for students to obtain white beep cards, as well as for seniors and people with disabilities or PWDs. This focused, on-site processing is essential, especially for schools that process the beep cards, so that they can benefit from the 50 percent discount faster and immediately,” said Acting Secretary Lopez.
The caravan was met with immediate appreciation from beneficiaries. Marketing student Myca expressed relief at the convenience. “It was less hassle because I no longer had to queue at the LRT or MRT just to get a beep card. The 50% discount is helpful because what cannot be used for fare can be used for other expenses such as food and school supplies, especially for students.”
Physics major Charles added that the discount is a vital help for students with limited budgets, noting that the on-site processing was well-organized.
The benefits extend beyond the student body. Faculty member Maam Marissa praised the efficiency, noting the positive impact on other vulnerable groups. “I really appreciate this process that you’ve come to the schools. It’s a very orderly process, and I’m thankful you prioritize this special section for seniors and PWDs,” she stated. Like students, senior citizens and PWDs are entitled to a 50 percent fare discount on every train ride.
The two-day DLSU caravan aims to serve a total of 360 students, 40 seniors, and 40 PWDs. Following the successful start at DLSU, the DOTr confirms the White Beep Card Caravan will continue its expansion to other schools in the coming weeks to ensure wider coverage and accessibility to subsidized fares.
