The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the safety, protection, and welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) with the forthcoming launch of the Bahay Kalinga Shelter 3 (BK3) in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Scheduled to open its doors on December 1, 2025, BK3 is an additional temporary shelter designed to provide enhanced care and a more dignified living environment for distressed male OFWs awaiting repatriation or the resolution of employment disputes.
The DMW’s ongoing mandate to ensure the welfare of OFWs experiencing challenging working conditions—including contract violations, welfare concerns, and situations requiring immediate assistance—is the driving force behind the expansion.
A high-level DMW delegation, led by Undersecretary Jainal T. Rasul Jr., along with Assistant Secretary Julyn Ambito-Fermin and Labor Attachés Dominador Salanga and Sulaiman Mutia, conducted a final inspection of the new facility on November 12. The inspection confirmed that the shelter meets the high standards set by the Department for OFW accommodation.
“The opening of Bahay Kalinga Shelter 3 is a clear and tangible representation of the DMW’s promise to our bagong bayani (new heroes),” said an official DMW statement. “We are dedicated to providing decent, spacious, and humane facilities, coupled with faster and more effective service to every Filipino worker abroad,” said Undersecretary Rasul.
The new three-story BK3 facility spans an area of 850 square meters and features 10 dedicated bedroom units. It has the capacity to accommodate up to 100 male OFWs comfortably.
The design prioritizes the holistic recovery of the residents, aiming to support both their physical and mental health. Amenities include:
- A wide courtyard
- A fully equipped gym area
- Comfortable living rooms
- Comprehensive toilet facilities
- A central kitchen and wash area
- Uninterrupted internet access
The Migrant Workers Office in Riyadh (MWO-Riyadh) emphasized that BK3 is conceived as more than just a temporary residence. It will also serve as a dedicated venue for gender-sensitive programs and reintegration activities, helping to prepare the OFWs for their eventual return and smooth transition back into life in the Philippines.
With the addition of BK3, the DMW solidifies its capacity to serve and protect its nationals in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, ensuring that distressed OFWs receive the immediate help and care they deserve.
