Agila Subic commits $1.5 million to sustainable development and community empowerment in Subic Bay

Agila Subic Compass (Agila Subic), the management company for the major multi-use facility and shipyard in Subic Bay, announced the rollout of a $1.5 million corporate social responsibility (CSR) framework. This substantial investment underscores the company’s deep commitment to sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and community empowerment in its host community of Barangay Cawag and neighboring areas.

The comprehensive CSR initiative is anchored by three major programs: a critical Road Enhancement Project, the continuation of a successful Mangrove Planting Program, and a new Adopt-a-School Program for local public schools. These initiatives are strategically designed to rehabilitate vital ecosystems, enhance educational facilities, and strengthen essential infrastructure.

Agila Subic’s flagship infrastructure project, the Road Enhancement Project, is nearing completion by year-end. This effort covers the crucial 5-kilometer stretch leading to the Agila Subic facility in Barangay Cawag.

Key Upgrades: The final phase of improvements includes road paving and re-blocking, the installation of safety signage, and the deployment of LED solar-powered streetlights to improve night-time visibility.

Compliance & Coordination: The project adheres to stringent environmental and safety standards set by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and was conducted in close coordination with the Subic municipal engineering office.

“This road serves as a lifeline for workers, businesses, and residents,” said Mark Glenn Millan, Agila Subic General Manager. “With the improvements, we expect to not only boost accessibility to the facility but also generate more opportunities for economic growth. More importantly, this will make travel safer and more convenient, resulting in a better quality of life for Cawag residents and the entire community.”

Environment: Strengthening Climate Resilience through Mangrove Reforestation

Building on the successful 2024 launch, Agila Subic is continuing its commitment to ecological rehabilitation through its Mangrove Reforestation Project.

Goal: The program aims to plant 20,000 mangrove seedlings across a 50-hectare mangrove area in Sitio Cabitaugan (Sitio Sapao), a small fishing village in Barangay Cawag.

Partnerships: Agila Subic has partnered with Path Foundation Philippines Inc. (PFPI), and is working alongside the Pagsalba Sa Bakhaw Ng Mga Kababaihan Ng Cawag – Women Managed Area (PBKC-WMA), a local women’s association dedicated to environmental stewardship.

Mangrove reforestation is vital for supporting fisheries, enhancing coastal protection against climate threats, and increasing carbon storage. This initiative provides extensive environmental, social, and economic benefits, improving food security and climate resilience for the local fishing community.

Education: Enabling Quality Learning with the Adopt-a-School Program

Agila Subic will formally launch its Adopt-a-School Program at the beginning of 2026, targeting public elementary and high schools in Barangay Cawag.

Partnership: Under Republic Act No. 8525, the company will execute a Memorandum of Agreement with the Department of Education (DepEd) for a minimum two-year partnership.

Support Initiatives: The commitment includes supporting critical infrastructure needs, such as the construction of new classrooms and the repair of existing school facilities. The company will also donate unutilized furniture to enhance learning environments.

“Investing in education is investing in the future workforce of Subic and the entire region,” the Agila Subic executive shared. “Our goal is to provide young students a place that is safe, comfortable, and conducive to learning—one that will encourage and inspire them to thrive.”

The combined CSR initiatives align seamlessly with Agila Subic’s mission to operate a world-class facility while uplifting its host communities. Beyond generating employment and fostering economic activity in the region, the company stresses its core responsibility to ensure that growth is shared and sustainable.

“These programs embody what we stand for,” Millan stated. “Whether it’s building safer roads, restoring coastal ecosystems, or improving schools, we are committed to making sure that our presence in Subic leaves a positive and lasting impact.”
