The Philippine government has expressed optimism following a high-level meeting with Yousef Esmaeilzadeh, who signaled Iran’s readiness to support the country’s key maritime and energy security concerns.
According to Claire Castro, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer, the Iranian envoy conveyed a strong willingness to assist during discussions with Maria Theresa Lazaro of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Sharon Garin of the Department of Energy.
“The meeting was exceptionally warm and open, reflecting a shared commitment to cooperation. We are highly optimistic about a favorable outcome,” Castro said.
Ambassador Esmaeilzadeh noted that Iran had been anticipating the Philippines’ outreach and reaffirmed Tehran’s readiness to respond to Manila’s specific requests. Both sides agreed to channel all formal requests through diplomatic channels to ensure swift processing.
A key request raised by Secretary Lazaro is for Iran to formally designate the Philippines as a “non-hostile country,” alongside guarantees of safe passage for Philippine-flagged vessels and oil shipments. These measures are considered critical for safeguarding Filipino seafarers and ensuring stable energy supplies.
The Department of Energy is currently finalizing the technical details for immediate submission to Iranian authorities.
Secretary Lazaro is also expected to hold a direct conversation with Iran’s Foreign Minister to secure these commitments at the highest diplomatic level.
The developments have been promptly reported to Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., underscoring the administration’s focus on protecting national interests and strengthening international cooperation.
