DOE awards 5-star energy rating to Department of Agriculture following nationwide audit

The Department of Energy (DOE) commended the Department of Agriculture (DA) for achieving a 91% compliance rating—the highest possible distinction of 5 stars—under the Government Energy Management Program (GEMP).

This prestigious rating follows a series of rigorous, unannounced spot audits conducted by DOE efficiency experts at various agriculture department facilities. The audits are designed to ensure that government entities are leading by example in the national effort to modernize energy consumption and reduce the public sector’s carbon footprint.

The GEMP initiative mandates a strategic framework for all government agencies, targeting a 10% to 20% reduction in both electricity and fuel consumption. By hitting the 91% mark, the Department of Agriculture has demonstrated an elite level of operational discipline and a commitment to fiscal responsibility.

“The Department of Agriculture has set a gold standard for public sector efficiency,” said the Secretary of Energy. “Their proactive approach to energy management proves that large-scale institutional change is not only possible but can be achieved with remarkable precision. This 5-star rating isn’t just a badge of honor; it represents significant taxpayer savings and a tangible reduction in our environmental impact.”

The DOE’s evaluation focused on several critical energy-saving pillars, including:

  • Infrastructure Optimization: Implementation of LED lighting, HVAC efficiency protocols, and smart power management.

  • Fuel Management: Streamlining fleet operations and reducing unnecessary fuel expenditure.

  • Behavioral Change: Evidence of agency-wide awareness programs that encourage employees to adopt “energy-first” habits.

The success of the Department of Agriculture serves as a blueprint for other agencies currently undergoing GEMP evaluations. As energy costs and climate concerns continue to rise, the DOE remains committed to its oversight role, ensuring that every watt and liter used by the government is maximized for the public good.

The DOE will continue to conduct unannounced audits throughout the fiscal year to maintain the momentum of the GEMP initiative and support agencies in their transition toward sustainable operations.
