DOTr pushes for more active transport facilities to prioritize pedestrians, cyclists, at-risk road users

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) pushes for the establishment of more active transport facilities and infrastructure to ensure adequate safe spaces for cyclists, pedestrians and other at-risk road users.

Upon the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the DOTr continues to improve and expand road infrastructures such as bike lanes, pedestrian and jogger pathways, and end-of-trip facilities to make sure the roads are inclusive and safe.

Transportation Secretary Banoy Lopez cited Marikina City as one of the local government units (LGUs) where DOTr has established bike lanes and end-of-trip facilities.

To date, the transport agency has constructed a total of 20.98-kilometer bike lane networks in Marikina City. The DOTr has also established two long-term end-of-trip facilities and 70 bike racks within the city.

LGU employees and a cycling group convenor who regularly bike going to work are thankful to DOTr for providing active transport facilities in Marikina City. The facilities include all-gender shower room and locker rooms.

As of the first quarter of 2026, the DOTr has constructed a total of 1,100 kilometers of bike lanes nationwide, while targeting to establish 2,400 kilometers across the country by 2028.
