DOE secures more reliable power supply in off-grid areas; additional capacities to benefit island communities

The Department of Energy (DOE) continues to strengthen power services and ensure steady electricity for residents, businesses, and vital public facilities in off-grid and island provinces, with improved operations and new capacity additions now taking effect across Catanduanes, Mindoro, Palawan, and micro-grid areas nationwide.

Catanduanes now enjoys fully stable and continuous power supply, as the new designated power supplier is already in full operation, delivering reliable service to all towns in the province.

In Occidental Mindoro, supply is well secured with 36 MW contracted capacity available to meet peak demand of only 26.54 MW. This effectively addresses earlier outage concerns. To further reinforce the system, DM Consunji Inc. has secured contracts to deliver 13 MW for the Mamburao, Paluan, Santa Cruz, and Abra de Ilog (MAPSA) area and 4 MW for Sablayan, adding 17 MW more capacity to the province’s power pool.

For Oriental Mindoro, dependable capacity currently stands at 76.20 MW, enough to meet demand of 64.40 MW, though additional reserves remain necessary to ensure stronger resilience. From the total 57 MW newly contracted capacity, the DOE is prioritizing the timely delivery of the first 31 MW and is also reviewing the performance and implementation pace of new power producers to prevent delays in project roll-out.

Palawan Mainland maintains a comfortable supply position, with 89.70 MW dependable capacity supporting demand of 61.74 MW. To further improve system reliability, the DOE is undertaking a comprehensive review of Palawan’s grid configuration, while also exploring opportunities to tap additional generation capacity from mining facilities ceasing operations in the area.

Meanwhile, the wider network of micro-grid systems remains generally stable. Only a minor operational concern was recorded at PSPI Balut Island, which was quickly resolved and has since returned to full service.

“Making sure that stable, enough, and affordable electricity reaches even our farthest towns and islands lies at the heart of our work because reliable power is not just about lines and plants,” Energy Undersecretary Mario Marasigan said. “It means brighter homes, stronger livelihoods, safer communities, and greater hope and progress for every Filipino family, no matter where you live.”

The DOE continues close monitoring, fast-tracking of priority projects, and performance reviews to further strengthen supply security, build adequate reserves, and improve service quality across all off-grid systems.
