Prime Infra welcomes KANSAI execs to Wawa Pumped Storage Project

Prime Infra and its subsidiary, Olympia Violago Water & Power Inc. (OVWPI) hosted executives from Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (KANSAI), Japan’s second-largest electric power company, for a visit to the Wawa Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Project (Wawa PSP) in Rizal.

Led by President and CEO Guillaume Lucci, Prime Infra welcomed KANSAI Hydropower Division General Manager Yuichi Yamane and Hydropower Division Development Department General Manager Koichi Ohta.

Joining Lucci were Prime Infra Chief Financial Officer Sandy Alipio, Chief Projects Officer for Hydropower and Dam Projects Andres Arnason, and Pumped Storage Projects President Noel Gonzales.

The visit comes after KANSAI signed definitive agreements to acquire a 14% equity interest in PMJVCo Holdings, Inc. (PMJVCo), the parent company of OVWPI, owner and operator of the Wawa PSP.

KANSAI has presence in multiple sectors, including electric power, district heating, gas supply, and telecommunications. In Japan, it operates four pumped storage hydropower plants with a combined installed capacity of 4,884 MW.

Slated for completion by 2030, the Wawa PSP is 18.65% complete, with the main access road, tunnel excavation works for emergency cable and ventilation, main access to the powerhouse, and construction adits already completed. Once operational, the facility will deliver 600 MW of generating capacity and 6,000 MWh of energy storage, serving as a critical backbone for grid stability and renewable energy integration in the Philippines.

Together with the 1,400 MW Pakil Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Project, the Wawa PSP forms part of the total 2GW pumped storage portfolio of Prime Infra. Both are certified Energy Projects of National Significance by the government.
