The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has apprehended eight individuals following the discovery of an undocumented fishing vessel suspected of engaging in the unauthorized transfer of petroleum products off the coast of Barangay Makawayan, Tingloy, Batangas, on August 15, 2026.
PCG personnel initiated the operation after receiving reports of a vessel drifting near the shoreline due to engine trouble. Upon boarding and inspection, a crew member admitted that both the vessel and its fuel cargo lacked the necessary documentation.
Subsequent investigation revealed that the vessel was transporting approximately 5,000 liters of diesel—4,000 liters of which were identified as cargo, with 1,000 liters designated for the vessel’s own consumption.
The PCG Legal Unit and the Investigation and Detection Unit are currently conducting a comprehensive case build-up to determine the source, ownership, and intended disposition of the fuel, as well as to verify the legality of the transport.
Pending the filing of formal charges and inquest proceedings, the eight apprehended individuals remain in PCG custody. They may face potential violations of the following Philippine laws:
