DA is constructing new cold-storage facilities in Cordillera Administrative Region to mitigate crop wastage

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is currently constructing seven cold-storage facilities across the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) to help prevent crop and vegetable wastage, particularly during the rainy season, according to a Palace press briefing led by Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro.

The initiative addresses recent reports regarding agricultural losses and challenges faced by farmers in Benguet due to weather-related disruptions. Adverse weather conditions, including landslides, have historically impacted the movement of perishable farm produce by preventing traders and buyers from reaching local trading posts.

To address immediate concerns, the regional office of the DA has assisted in transporting and distributing approximately 1.2 million pesos worth of vegetables to markets in Pampanga, Manila, and Cavite over the past week. The agency continues to monitor local trading posts to evaluate additional support needed by farmers.

Looking toward long-term solutions, the DA has included a proposal in its 2027 budget for a dedicated vegetable processing facility on a 1.5-hectare property located in La Trinidad. This facility is intended to process vegetables, add higher value to local produce, and extend shelf life.
