Philippine telecommunications provider PLDT Enterprise launched emergency Starlink satellite connectivity services in earthquake-affected areas of Mindanao. This marks a significant deployment of rapid-response communications infrastructure in the region.
Following the earthquake, PLDT and Smart field teams assessed network facilities across General Santos City and multiple municipalities in South Cotabato. The company reported that most network infrastructure remained operational, with service disruptions stemming mainly from commercial power outages at certain sites rather than physical equipment damage.
PLDT Enterprise coordinated with the Department of Information and Communications Technology and local government units to deploy Starlink satellite broadband in areas where conventional connectivity faced disruption. The installations prioritized healthcare facilities, including Malungon Sarangani Provincial Hospital and Alabel Sarangani Provincial Hospital, as well as emergency command centers supporting rescue operations.
Menardo “Butch” Jimenez Jr., PLDT Chief Operating Officer, emphasized the role of connectivity during crises. He noted that restored communication links enable families to contact one another, allow emergency responders to coordinate more effectively, and support communities in early recovery phases.
Blums Pineda, Senior Vice President and Head of Enterprise Business Group at PLDT Enterprise, described the company’s positioning as support for emergency personnel. Pineda stated that PLDT’s approach focuses on rapid assessment of on-ground needs, service restoration, and targeted connectivity deployment to locations requiring immediate attention.
The Starlink rollout highlights PLDT Enterprise’s strategic commitment to building a resilient communications infrastructure that can function effectively even in challenging conditions, such as power outages and geographical limitations.
