BSP Gov. Eli Remolona, Jr. conferred AICB honorary fellowship for transformative contributions to banking

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Eli M. Remolona, Jr. was honored with an Honorary Fellowship by the Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers (AICB) during the 8th Chartered Banker Conferment Ceremony held on 24 May 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The AICB’s Honorary Fellowship is one of the institute’s highest distinctions, bestowed on individuals who have made outstanding and transformative contributions to the banking and financial services industry across the region.

In his acceptance speech, Governor Remolona highlighted the significance of regional collaboration in the financial sector. “I accept this fellowship not just as a personal honor—though it certainly is—but as a recognition of our shared aspirations. The future of finance is regional, and today’s honorees are paving the way. I’m proud to be part of this community of forward-thinking professionals,” he stated. AICB Chairman Tan Sri Azman Hashim commended Governor Remolona’s influence in modernizing the Philippine banking system and advancing ASEAN financial integration. “Governor Remolona’s leadership in shaping policy, driving digital transformation, and strengthening financial stability exemplifies the impactful leadership that the Honorary Fellowship seeks to recognize,” he said.

AICB CEO Edward Ling also paid tribute to Governor Remolona’s lifelong dedication to public service and financial reform.

“The title of Honorary Fellow is a commendation of your intellect, integrity, and enduring impact. You are a true statesman—a man for all seasons,” Ling said.

Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Dato’ Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour echoed these sentiments, stating, “This recognition is a fitting tribute to your exemplary leadership and commitment to excellence in the profession.”

Governor Remolona’s connection to Malaysia is especially significant. From 2019 to 2022, he served as a professor of finance and director of central banking at the Asia School of Business in Kuala Lumpur. Prior to this, he was the Chief Representative for Asia and the Pacific of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) from 2008 to 2018, where he played a key role in strengthening financial frameworks across Asia.

The AICB, headquartered in Malaysia, is the sole professional body for the banking industry in the country. It champions education, ethical standards, and professional excellence. The Honorary Fellowship underscores the Institute’s commitment to recognizing leaders who have driven innovation, elevated professional standards, and advanced regional cooperation in global finance.
