MMDA intensifies road clearing ahead of EDSA major repairs

Two weeks before the commencement of major repair works on EDSA, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has significantly ramped up its road clearing and pedestrian safety operations across Metro Manila. The intensified efforts aim to remove obstructions, particularly along alternate routes known as Mabuhay Lanes, to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow during the upcoming rehabilitation.

Gabriel Go, head of the MMDA Special Operations Group Strike Force, emphasized the agency’s commitment to public safety and mobility. “Our clearing operation drive is not only in anticipation of the upcoming rebuild of our major thoroughfare, EDSA, but is also a continuous part of our efforts to clean up our roads,” Go stated at a Malacañang press briefing. He added that the MMDA is “tripling up” its efforts to achieve this goal.

The MMDA has been coordinating closely with local government units, barangay officials, and civil society groups to facilitate these clearing operations and disseminate crucial information to the public. While EDSA remains a primary focus, the MMDA is also actively clearing obstructions throughout Metro Manila, including sidewalk vendors, illegal structures, and chokepoints along alternate routes.

“We are also trying to make our routes, our roads, and our sidewalks walkable,” Go affirmed, highlighting the MMDA’s dedication to improving pedestrian safety.

The MMDA also reassured emergency responders and volunteer groups that their routes will remain clear and protected during the clearing drive. “Rest assured to our partners, volunteer groups, and emergency responders, we are with you—we are all partners when it comes to disaster and emergency responses,” Go said.

With the phased rehabilitation of EDSA set to begin on June 13, the MMDA has released an updated list of alternate routes, the Mabuhay Lanes, on its official website and social media platforms. These routes will be kept free of obstructions to ensure seamless travel for commuters moving across Metro Manila.

The MMDA urges all road users, business owners, and pedestrians to comply with clearing regulations, refrain from illegal parking, and respect designated pedestrian zones. The public is encouraged to report any road obstructions through MMDA hotlines or official social media channels.
