Marcos launches 50% discount Beep cards for students riding LRT, MRT

Commuting to school just got lighter on the pocket. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Saturday led the rollout of new Beep cards that give students a 50 percent fare discount on the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3.

The launch took place at the LRT-2 Legarda Station, where students lined up to avail themselves of the special white Beep cards.

“Ngayong araw na ito, inilunsad na natin ang bagong sistema para makakuha ng Beep card ang mga estudyante na may 50 percent discount. Kalahati lang sa pamasahe ang babayaran nila,” Marcos said.

The discounted cards were expedited to meet the urgent demand of students. From the old 7–10 days processing time, cards can now be issued in just three minutes upon presentation of a valid school ID.

Students can get the cards for a ₱30 one-time fee, and load them using either cash or digital wallets such as GCash and PayPal.

Transportation officials, led by DOTr Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez and LRTA Administrator Hernando Cabrera, joined the President at the event. Marcos personally checked the processing booth and mingled with students lining up for their cards.

The program follows the President’s earlier directive granting 50 percent fare discounts to students starting June this year. Senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) received the same privilege in July.

“This is a big step in helping our young people, our most important asset. We look forward to the benefits this will bring to students,” Marcos said.
