PNR unveils updates on modernized North-South Commuter Railway project

The Philippine National Railways (PNR) announced significant progress on the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) Project, a flagship initiative poised to revolutionize public transportation in the country. Atty Shyanne Juan-Monera, PNR’s legal division manager, presented the update during the recent Transport & Logistics Forum 2025.

Dubbed a modernized railway system, the 147-kilometer NSCR project is a cornerstone of the Marcos administration’s infrastructure agenda.

Atty. Juan-Monera highlighted its crucial role in providing a safe, comfortable, and efficient transit service for Filipinos, directly addressing the nation’s growing mobility needs. Upon completion, the railway is projected to serve a staggering 800,000 passengers daily, significantly alleviating traffic congestion and fostering economic growth along its route.

The NSCR project is a model of multi-agency collaboration, utilizing the PNR’s existing right-of-way. It is jointly implemented by the PNR and the Department of Transportation (DOTr), with essential financial and technical support from international partners, including the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The Transport & Logistics Forum 2025 provided an ideal platform to discuss the importance of the NSCR. The event brought together key industry leaders to explore the critical roles of railways, ports, supply chains, and maritime mobility in driving sustained growth, innovation, and resilience throughout the Philippines.

The Philippine National Railways is the national rail transport company of the Philippines, operating services on the island of Luzon. PNR is committed to providing reliable, safe, and cost-effective railway services to connect communities and support the country’s economic development.
