MARINA endorses and backs innovative commercial vessel building in Negros Oriental

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has expressed its strong commendation and full support for the pioneering shipbuilding project undertaken by Maayo Ship Building and Ship Repairs, Inc. in Tampi, San Jose, Negros Oriental. This significant project marks a major milestone in the continued growth and modernization of the Philippine shipbuilding industry.

Maayo Shipyard is currently constructing its first commercial vessel, the MARTIN 10. The project is progressing based on MARINA-approved preliminary plans and is under the careful oversight of the MARINA-accredited Classification Society (MACS), Ocean Register of Shipping Inc.

The vessel is anticipated to be completed by December 2025, and its progress is a testament to the expanding technical capabilities and proficiency of local shipyards across the Philippines in building high-quality vessels.

MARINA Administrator Sonia B. Malaluan recently visited the Maayo Shipyard facility and met with personnel to personally discuss the project’s progress. The visit underscores the national significance of the undertaking in advancing the local maritime sector.

Administrator Malaluan emphasized that such initiatives are in direct alignment with MARINA’s proposed Shipbuilding and Ship Repair (SBSR) Development Bill, which is designed to further strengthen and modernize the country’s SBSR sector.

“The development of MARTIN 10 stands as a concrete example of the vast potential of our local shipyards and the promising growth they offer to support the modernization of domestic shipping,” stated Administrator Malaluan.

Maayo Ship Building and Ship Repairs, Inc. conveyed its deep gratitude for MARINA’s support. The company reaffirmed its commitment to building high-quality and safe vessels that strictly comply with all national standards. Furthermore, the company highlighted its dedication to continuing to provide employment and development opportunities for the local community in Negros Oriental.

This collaborative effort between MARINA and Maayo Shipyard signals a positive trajectory for the regional and national maritime industry, fostering both economic development and enhanced maritime capabilities.
