Port congestion eases in Eastern Visayas following San Juanico Bridge load limit increase

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) announced a significant reduction in truck queuing and port congestion in Eastern Visayas, specifically at Amandayehan Port. This improvement follows the successful implementation of the two-way increased load limit at the San Juanico Bridge and strategic management by the PPA.

On December 12, 2025, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) formally expanded the load capacity of the San Juanico Bridge. This policy shift has allowed for a more fluid movement of heavy vehicles, directly addressing the severe bottlenecks that previously led to long waiting times for cargo trucks.

As a result of this better traffic flow, the PPA reports that the “bottleneck” conditions at Amandayehan Port have been steadily alleviated, ensuring faster turnaround times for logistics providers and traders in the region.

In response to the stabilized land-side traffic and shifting demand, several shipping lines serving the Tacloban–Amandayehan route have announced adjustments to their operations:

  • GT Express: Formally exited the route on December 20, 2025, returning to its primary approved route in Matnog–Allen.

  • Sta. Clara Shipping (LCT Aldain Dowey) & Roble Shipping (LCT Edison): Both vessels have concluded their service on this specific route.

  • Current Service: The LCT Felice 1 of VS Grand Ferries remains as the primary vessel serving the route, maintaining essential maritime connectivity.

The PPA remains proactive in monitoring the operational status of the Tacloban–Amandayehan corridor. Despite the reduction in the number of vessels, the PPA assures the public that current maritime capacity is being balanced with the improved land-side efficiency provided by the San Juanico Bridge.

“Our priority is to maintain a smooth, safe, and efficient flow of transportation,” a PPA spokesperson stated. “We are in constant coordination with the DPWH and local authorities to ensure that the progress we’ve made in reducing congestion is sustained for the benefit of the region’s economy.”

The PPA will continue to evaluate vessel deployments to ensure that the requirements of the riding public and the logistics sector are met without returning to previous levels of congestion.
