The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) in Central Visayas is stepping up efforts to improve vessel safety. A technical seminar on ship stability was recently held to strengthen the skills of maritime professionals and prevent accidents at sea.
The MARINA Regional Office 7 successfully conducted a Technical Seminar on Ship Stability on April 17 in Cebu City.
The activity was held in partnership with the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SONAME) Inc. and MARINA-accredited marine surveying companies authorized to conduct inclining tests and stability calculations.
The said seminar aimed to enhance the technical competence of maritime stakeholders and reinforce the agencyās commitment to vessel safety.
Ship stability is considered a critical factor in maritime operations, as poor stability management can lead to capsizing, cargo shifting, and other serious risks at sea.
During the opening session, SONAME VisMin Chapter Secretary Jose Venancio Vero Jr. highlighted the importance of proper stability management in protecting lives, safeguarding the marine environment, and ensuring safe vessel operations.
Meanwhile, industry experts from MARINA-accredited surveying firms shared best practices and technical knowledge.
Topics discussed included standardized procedures for inclining tests and stability assessments, limiting KG, preparation of damage control plans, and the use of stability calculators to ensure safe cargo securing.
Participants from maritime organizations and academic institutions attended the seminar, including representatives from shipping registries, engineering firms, and universities, along with additional participants joining online.
MARINA 7 says the initiative is part of its continuing efforts to strengthen regulatory oversight, promote uniform standards, and improve maritime safety across Central Visayas and nearby regions.
