DNV and Singapore Institute of Technology partner to launch Master of Science in Vessel Management

DNV and the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) have announced a strategic partnership to co-develop and deliver a specialized Master of Science in Vessel Management.

Facilitated by the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF), the program aims to strengthen Singapore’s talent pipeline and solidify its standing as a premier international maritime center.

Formally signed during Singapore Maritime Week, the program is tailored for engineering and naval architecture graduates with limited onboard experience, as well as maritime professionals seeking to transition into technical superintendent roles.

By providing an alternative shore-based pathway for those with technical or seafaring backgrounds, the curriculum addresses the industry’s critical need for skilled vessel management.

The maritime sector is currently undergoing a massive transformation driven by digitalization and the shift to low-carbon fuels. This evolution has fundamentally changed the requirements for shore-based leadership.

“Superintendent roles increasingly require not only technical expertise and operational judgement, but a deep understanding of today’s emerging technologies,” said Dr. Shahrin Osman, Business Development Director at DNV Maritime Advisory. “DNV and SIT aim to equip new entrants with the applied knowledge and practical competence needed as the industry transitions towards more digital and lower carbon operations.”

The program utilizes a flexible, practice-oriented model that blends SIT’s applied learning pedagogy with DNV’s global industry expertise. Key focus areas include:

  • Technical & Managerial Capabilities: Leading safe and compliant vessel operations.

  • Digital Proficiency: Leveraging smart ship technologies and data-driven decision-making.

  • Regulatory Resilience: Navigating increasingly strict international environmental and safety standards.

Professor Susanna Leong, Deputy President (Academic) & Provost at SIT, emphasized the commitment to industry readiness: “Together with DNV, we aim to strengthen Singapore’s pipeline of skilled maritime professionals who are able to manage complex vessel operations and drive the shift towards more sustainable practices.”

As ships become more sophisticated, the role of the technical superintendent must evolve in tandem. The Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) plays a pivotal role in ensuring the program remains aligned with the needs of the “Maritime Singapore” ecosystem.

“The archetype of the marine and technical superintendents of the future needs to evolve,” noted Ms. Tan Beng Tee, Executive Director of SMF. “We see this new master’s programme complementing the seafaring route in increasing the supply of skilled superintendents.”

The Master of Science in Vessel Management is expected to commence in early 2027.
