Philippines celebrates Day of the Filipino Seafarer 2026

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) led the nation in celebrating the Day of the Filipino Seafarer 2026 today, June 25, honoring the invaluable contributions of the country’s maritime professionals who sustain global commerce.

Bringing together government officials, maritime stakeholders, and seafarers, the event recognized the dedication of the men and women keeping world trade moving. This year’s celebration was anchored on the timely theme: “Carrying World Trade, Carrying the Risks.”

In a special message, President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. praised Filipino seafarers as premier global professionals whose skills keep international supply chains resilient. “Through their skill and dedication, global trade flows smoothly, supply chains remain resilient, and economies thrive. Beyond keeping the world connected, they bring immense pride and honor to our nation,” President Marcos stated.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s strict commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Filipino maritime workers, urging all sectors to enhance safety and security measures for the seafaring workforce.

MARINA Administrator Sonia B. Malaluan welcomed guests by highlighting both the resilience of seafarers and the harsh realities they face at sea. She emphasized that the celebration is as much a call to action as it is a tribute.

“This celebration… reminds us of our collective responsibility to ensure that seafarers are protected, supported, and empowered throughout their careers,” Administrator Malaluan said.

She pledged that MARINA will continue strengthening maritime education, training, certification, and dedicated welfare programs.

The national celebration featured solidarity messages from key local and international maritime leaders, including:

  • CG Admiral Ronnie Gil Latorilla Gavan (Philippine Coast Guard Commandant)

  • Francis N. Tolentino (Acting Labor Secretary)

  • Hans Leo J. Cacdac (Migrant Workers Secretary)

  • Giovanni Z. Lopez (Acting Transportation Secretary)

  • Arsenio Dominguez (International Maritime Organization Secretary-General)

Beyond the ceremonial tributes, the event hosted vital industry discussions addressing maritime digitalization, streamlined seafarer documentation services, and mental health and wellness within the profession. MARINA also utilized the platform to launch several new initiatives focused on driving excellence, innovation, and inclusivity across the maritime sector.

Through this successful landmark celebration, MARINA solidifies its commitment to championing the interests of Filipino seafarers, ensuring they remain protected leaders in a rapidly evolving global industry.
