MARINA issues show cause order against Santa Clara Shipping for overloading

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) Region V has issued a stern warning to all shipping lines, demanding strict adherence to safety protocols and passenger comfort, or face severe consequences. This follows the issuance of a show cause order against Santa Clara Shipping Corporation for multiple alleged violations, including the overloading of passengers and the maintenance of unsanitary restrooms on one of its vessels.

Acting on the President’s directives to ensure a safe and comfortable travel experience for all passengers, MARINA took immediate action after receiving reports concerning Santa Clara Shipping Corporation’s operations.

The show cause order specifically cites the shipping line’s vessel, MV Steve Albert, which reportedly failed to adhere to its scheduled Matnog-Allen Port route on May 10th. Furthermore, the vessel allegedly overstayed in Matnog for more than three hours, causing potential inconvenience and disruption to passengers.

Adding to the concerns, MARINA inspectors observed that the restrooms on board the MV Steve Albert were in an unsanitary and unhygienic condition, posing a significant health risk to passengers.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon has strongly condemned these alleged violations, stating that such negligence will not be tolerated. He emphasized the importance of shipping lines prioritizing passenger safety and well-being above all else.

In the formal show cause order, MARINA has directed Santa Clara Shipping Corporation to provide a comprehensive explanation within ten working days as to why sanctions should not be imposed against them for these alleged infractions. This order underscores MARINA’s commitment to upholding maritime safety standards and ensuring that shipping lines are held accountable for any actions that compromise passenger safety and comfort.

MARINA reiterated its commitment to diligently monitor all shipping operations and will not hesitate to impose strict penalties on any entity found to violate maritime regulations. This action serves as a clear message to all shipping lines to prioritize passenger safety, adhere to schedules, and maintain acceptable standards of hygiene on their vessels.
