PNP seizes ₱441 million in suspected election-related cash at Mactan-Cebu airport

In a significant operation demonstrating its commitment to ensuring clean and orderly elections, the Philippine National Police (PNP) intercepted over ₱441 million in cash at the General Aviation Area of Mactan-Cebu International Airport in the early hours of May 10, 2024, just before the official end of the campaign period for the 2025 National and Local Elections.

Initial background checks revealed alarming details. Several suspects were found to own fake driver’s licenses, and one individual had an active INTERPOL notice and outstanding arrest warrants. Around 3:00 AM, the group attempted to legitimize the cash with a casino certificate, claiming it originated from gambling winnings at the White Horse Junket. However, authorities quickly questioned the document’s authenticity, particularly given the junket operator’s prior involvement in the high-profile kidnapping of Anson Que and its subsequent shutdown following accusations of receiving ransom payments.

PNP Chief Police General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil emphasized the gravity of the operation and the PNP’s unwavering dedication to electoral integrity:

“In line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive, the PNP is fully committed to safeguarding the integrity of the 2025 elections. This substantial cash seizure sends a clear message: we will not tolerate any attempts to manipulate the democratic process through illicit means. Our priority is to ensure peace, order, and fairness throughout the electoral period, and we will pursue all necessary actions to uphold these principles.”

The PNP urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious election-related activities. This operation underscores the PNP’s commitment to ensuring clean, honest, and peaceful elections.
