DOTr, PPA, and DPWH collaborate to ensure seamless movement of goods amid San Juanico Bridge rehabilitation

The Department of Transportation (DOTr), in partnership with the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), is working closely with local officials in Tacloban and Samar to construct Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) facilities that will support uninterrupted movement of essential goods while the San Juanico Bridge undergoes critical rehabilitation.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon emphasized that the initiative is in response to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to maintain the continuous flow of food, fuel, and other vital commodities between Samar and Leyte during the bridge’s structural upgrade.

Secretary Dizon, together with PPA General Manager Jay Santiago, DPWH Undersecretary Robert Bernardo, and other government officials, visited Amandayehan Port in Basey, Samar, on Sunday to assess possible alternative routes and logistics hubs that can facilitate the seamless transfer of goods throughout the rehabilitation period.

In addition, Secretary Dizon returned to Tacloban Airport on Sunday to inspect the ongoing construction of the airport’s new Passenger Terminal Building (PTB). The visit follows up on his commitment made during his previous inspection in March.

The airport expansion is part of the President’s broader mandate to modernize regional airports across the country, aiming to improve passenger experience and accommodate the growing demand for air travel. Scheduled for completion in April 2026, the upgraded PTB will boost the airport’s capacity by 1,000 passengers and will feature expanded space for aircraft parking and improved flight control facilities.
