OAG highlights American Airlines’ continued dominance

American Airlines maintains its position as the world’s largest airline by frequencies, leading with 197,700 scheduled flights this month, significantly outpacing its closest competitor, Delta Air Lines, according to the latest data from OAG, a leading global travel data provider. The report also forecasts a healthy 3% increase in global capacity for June 2025 compared to the previous year, signaling continued recovery and expansion across the aviation sector.

American Airlines’ impressive frequency count is 39,400 more than Delta Air Lines, underscoring its expansive network. While American leads in sheer volume, United Airlines demonstrates the strongest year-over-year growth among major carriers, adding 11,900 more frequencies than last year. American Airlines also saw substantial growth, increasing its frequencies by 10,000. India’s IndiGo continues its rapid ascent, recording the fastest rate of growth with a 9.3% increase in frequencies compared to June 2024.

However, not all airlines in the Top 20 experienced growth. Southwest Airlines saw a slight dip of 1.3%, followed by Aeroflot (-1.8%), JetBlue (-3.8%), and Lufthansa (-4.7%), all reporting decreases in their monthly frequencies compared to last year.

Domestically, the USA remains the undisputed leader, boasting 92.7 million seats this month. This figure is a substantial 23.7 million seats larger than the second-largest domestic market, China, which accounts for 68.9 million seats.

Within the top domestic markets, Brazil is experiencing the fastest growth rate, up 9.7% from last year, followed closely by India with a 7.4% increase. Conversely, Indonesia shows the largest rate of decline for the third consecutive month, down 6.3% versus last year. Japan is the only other domestic market in decline this month, with a minor reduction of 0.9%.

OAG’s forecast for June 2025 global capacity indicates a total of 523.7 million seats, representing an addition of 17.2 million seats compared to June 2024. This growth highlights the ongoing expansion of air travel worldwide.

Regionally, Western Europe has edged out North America to become the largest region by capacity, with 117.7 million seats, slightly ahead of North America’s 117.1 million seats. This marks a switch from last month’s rankings. North East Asia maintains its position as the region with the largest growth in seat capacity, adding 3.7 million seats compared to June 2024, bringing its total to 109.5 million. Central Asia and Lower South America are also experiencing significant growth rates, up 18% and 9% respectively. Central/Western Africa is the only region showing a decline in capacity, down 3% versus last year, continuing a trend observed in previous months.

The data underscores a dynamic global aviation landscape, characterized by robust growth in many key markets and a clear leader in American Airlines.
