Port of Marawi now completed 7 years after siege, PBBM leads inspection

Construction of the Port of Marawi, along with the nearby Marawi Fish Port, has been completed providing connectivity and boosting economic recovery in the city nearly seven years after the 2017 siege.

President Marcos Jr. leads the inspection of the newly constructed Port of Marawi on June 23, 2025.

On June 23, 2025, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led the inspection of the new Port of Marawi, a major government infrastructure built with total budget of P262.5 million. Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Santiago, Presidential Adviser for Marawi Rehabilitation and Development Sec. Nasser Pangandaman, Sr., Lanao Del Sur Provincial Governor Mamintal Alonto Adiong, Jr. and other local officials joined the president.

The new port was developed by the PPA under the Marawi Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Peacebuilding Program (MRRP) of the Office of the Presidential Adviser for Marawi Rehabilitation and Development, is seen as a crucial facility in strengthening transportation and trade in the region.

The facility features an 8,000-square meter backup area, a single-storey passenger terminal building, a one-storey fish port, a berthing facilities for fast craft vessels, and a Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) ramp.

The Port has a 132 seating capacity in the passenger terminal building. PPA said there is no passenger vessel in the Marawi Port as it is located inside Lanao Lake. Currently, it is being used by motorized pump boats. The port can be used mainly for eco tourism and for the fisherfolks living around the lake, PPA added.

Before the project, local residents relied only on a basic causeway for their transportation and fishing needs. With the port now nearing full operation, it is expected to facilitate smoother movement of goods, passengers, and services across Marawi City and surrounding communities, especially via Lake Lanao—the second-largest lake in the Philippines.

President Marcos emphasized the importance of modern port infrastructure in Marawi and directed relevant agencies to study the development of additional ports around Lake Lanao to boost connectivity and regional integration.

Santiago noted that the Port of Marawi is part of the agency’s wider effort to enhance access and economic opportunities in underserved areas.

“We at the Philippine Ports Authority are honored to contribute to the rehabilitation of Marawi City through this project. We encourage the communities around Lake Lanao to maximize the use of this facility, which was made possible through the leadership of President Marcos,” Santiago said.
