DMW and Oman fortify labor protections for overseas Filipino workers

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Government of Oman announced strengthened labor cooperation aimed at enhancing the protection of the rights and welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Oman. This commitment was solidified during a high-level meeting in Manila between Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac and Omani Minister of Labor H.E. Mahad Bin Said Ali Baawain, joined by Minister of Foreign Affairs Sayyid Sadr Bin Hamood Albusaidi and other Omani representatives.

A central outcome of the discussions was the anticipation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Labor Cooperation, slated for signing by January 2026. This landmark agreement will introduce robust safeguards for Filipino workers, including ethical recruitment standards, fair employment terms, joint dispute resolution mechanisms, and regular oversight through a bilateral Joint Committee.

Secretary Cacdac highlighted the transformative potential of technology in optimizing OFW deployment. “By forging digital partnerships with host countries like Oman, we can make recruitment faster, more transparent, and more worker-friendly,” Secretary Cacdac stated. “Tech solutions can ensure every step is secure, accountable, and focused on protecting OFWs.”

Minister Baawain affirmed Oman’s interest in recruiting Filipino domestic workers, technicians, port staff, and other skilled professionals, opening new avenues for qualified OFWs.

The DMW’s efforts to bolster OFW support extend beyond Oman. In Jordan, over 48,000 Filipinos are integral to various sectors, including caregiving, hospitality, beauty services, and food service. Through ongoing international partnerships, the DMW remains steadfast in its mission to ensure OFWs have access to dignified work, fair treatment, and opportunities for skill development to succeed abroad.
