Alternergy secures key approval for Tanay wind project

Renewable power pioneer Alternergy Holdings Corporation (ALTER) announced that its subsidiary, Alternergy Tanay Wind Corporation (ATWC), has received a crucial green light from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) for the integration of its 128MW Tanay Rizal Wind Power Project into the Luzon transmission backbone. This approval allows ATWC to develop and own a dedicated point-to-point transmission facility, a significant step toward completing the massive project.

The approved plan involves the construction of two double-circuit, 500 kV transmission lines and a 33/500 kV switchyard with a 1 x 150 MW transformer. This infrastructure, with an estimated cost of Php 2.8 billion, will ensure the seamless transmission of renewable energy from the Tanay site to the grid.

The ERC’s approval also includes a unique two-stage interconnection scheme. Initially, an interim connection will be a bus-in connection to the existing 500 kV San Jose-Tayabas transmission backbone of the Luzon Grid. The final connection will be to the proposed Baras 500 kV Substation, which is currently pending completion by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). This phased approach ensures the project can begin delivering power while the final infrastructure is being built.

“This is a major milestone for our Tanay Wind Project and reinforces our commitment to expanding the Philippines’ renewable energy landscape,” said Gerry Magbanua, President of Alternergy. “The ERC’s approval is a testament to the project’s strategic importance and its potential to contribute significantly to the country’s energy security.”

This development positions Alternergy to play an even larger role in the nation’s transition to a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
