PAL poised to reclaim dominance on Manila-San Francisco route with A350-1000, intensifying competition with United Airlines

Philippine Airlines (PAL) is set to redefine the competitive landscape of the Manila-San Francisco air route, a market it has long championed. With a key rival, United Airlines, adding a second daily frequency on the route starting October 26, PAL is responding not with increased frequencies but with a strategic focus on a superior passenger experience.

This is centered on the introduction of its new Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, a move designed to not only reclaim a competitive edge but also solidify PAL’s position as the premier choice for travelers on this key trans-Pacific route.

Elevating the Competition: The A350-1000 Arrives

While United will temporarily hold an advantage in terms of daily frequencies with two Boeing 777-300ER flights to PAL’s single daily service, this will soon be neutralized. The arrival of PAL’s first A350-1000 in December 2025 will mark a significant upgrade to its long-haul fleet.

The new aircraft will feature a state-of-the-art business class cabin, which is expected to offer a level of design and comfort that will outclass United’s Polaris seats and rival some of the world’s most luxurious premium cabins, such as Starlux’s business class and Cathay Pacific’s Aria Suite. This next-generation hard product, combined with PAL’s renowned cabin crew service and signature Filipino hospitality, will provide a unique and unmatched travel experience.

“We are not just adding new aircraft; we are elevating the entire journey for our passengers,” said a PAL spokesperson. “Our focus is on delivering a world-class, consistent product that combines the best of modern aviation technology with the warmth of our Filipino service. The A350-1000 is a key part of this strategy, and it will give us the flexibility to grow and adapt to market needs while setting a new standard for premium travel.”

Long-Term Strategy for Global Competitiveness

With additional A350-1000 deliveries expected in 2026, PAL will have the flexibility to increase its Manila-San Francisco frequencies to two daily flights, either through a combination of A350-1000s and 777-300ERs or by pairing A350-1000s with its A350-900s. The airline believes that a consistent, high-quality product—from its seats to its service—is the key to long-term success.

PAL’s commitment to product consistency and competitive pricing positions the airline to not only secure its leadership on the Philippines-United States corridor but also to potentially expand its ultra-long-haul network to European destinations in the future. By focusing on value and quality, PAL is poised to secure its leadership in this highly competitive market.
