Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon and executives from Grab have discussed potential partnerships aimed at improving commuter mobility in the Philippines. The collaboration aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos’ directive to create a more commuter-friendly environment and an efficient, modern transport system that shifts away from a car-centric model.
Introducing Ride-Sharing and Carpooling Solutions
During a recent visit to Grab’s headquarters in Singapore, Secretary Dizon was presented with a new ride-sharing system designed to move more passengers and reduce reliance on single-passenger vehicles. The system will allow multiple commuters to be picked up from a single location and dropped off at various destinations, or picked up at different points and dropped off at a shared destination. This carpool service is expected to be piloted in the Philippines by the end of 2025.
“President Marcos has stressed that we must move as many commuters as possible,” Secretary Dizon noted. “This system from Grab will be one of the many ways we can carry more passengers and discourage the use of single-passenger vehicles.”
The pilot program will focus on offering the carpool service at key locations during peak hours, with guaranteed departures to maximize vehicle capacity and help ease road congestion.
Enhancing Efficiency with GrabMaps-Pioneer
In addition to the ride-sharing initiative, Grab also presented its GrabMaps-Pioneer platform. This crowdsourcing system uses cameras and high-definition data from four-wheel vehicles to create and update multi-modal maps and routes, which can further enhance the efficiency of Grab’s services for its partners and drivers.
“Grab Philippines is the DOTr’s committed partner in providing Filipinos efficient transportation through comfortable and efficient solutions to help commuters save time,” said Ronald Roda, Managing Director and Head of Grab Philippines.
Secretary Dizon expressed his gratitude, stating, “We would like to thank Grab for offering to provide Filipino commuters with multiple options and ensure they have a safe and comfortable daily commute.” The partnership underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging technology and private sector collaboration to solve the nation’s transportation challenges.
