Earthquake causes significant damage to Polambato Port in Bogo City

The Polambato Port in Bogo City sustained significant structural damage following the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck northern Cebu at 9:59 p.m. on September 30, 2025.

A large section of the Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO) ramp at the port was submerged due to the impact of the tremor, reducing the number of operational ramps from three to only one. This damage is expected to disrupt operations for several shipping companies, including Lite Shipping, Aznar Shipping, Kho Shipping, and others servicing routes between Cebu and the neighboring provinces of Masbate, Samar, and Leyte.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was located at 11.09°N, 124.13°E, approximately 17 kilometers north 73° east of Bogo City. Initially reported as a magnitude 6.7 event, it was later upgraded to magnitude 6.9. The quake, tectonic in origin, had a shallow depth of 5 kilometers, intensifying its impact across the region.

Local authorities and port officials have begun initial assessments to determine the full extent of the damage and immediate safety concerns. Emergency measures are being coordinated to minimize the disruption of cargo and passenger services, while engineers evaluate the feasibility of repairs and reinforce remaining operational facilities.

The mayor of Bogo City expressed concern over the disruption but assured the public that contingency plans are being developed. “The safety of our residents and port users remains our top priority. We are working closely with port authorities, shipping operators, and disaster response teams to ensure that essential transport and supply chains remain functional despite the damage,” the Mayor said.

Shipping companies operating at Polambato Port are expected to announce adjustments to their schedules in the coming days. Travelers and cargo owners are advised to monitor official advisories for rerouting or alternative transport arrangements.

Authorities are also urging vigilance as aftershocks remain possible in the aftermath of the quake.
